چکیده

Kramers’ exit problem is concerned with noise activated escape from a potential well. In case the noise strength, , (temperature measured in units of potential barrier height) is small this becomes a singular perturbation problem. It is shown that actually, most of the probability of the exit points on the separatrix is located at a distance O( √ ) from the saddle point and the probability vanishes altogether at the saddle point. The stochastic dynamics of the escaping trajectories, conditioned on not returning to a given critical energy contour, are studied analytically and numerically.

Analytical and Numerical Study of Kramers ’ Exit Problem I ∗

Kramers’ exit problem is concerned with noise activated escape from a potential well. In case the noise strength, , is small this becomes a singular perturbation problem. The distribution of exit points on the separatrix (in the phase plane) is shown to be spread away from the saddle point, where the energy is minimal. The stochastic dynamics of the escaping trajectories, conditioned on not ret...

Kramers’ problem for a variable collision frequency model

The often-studied problem known as Kramers’ problem, in the general area of rarefied-gas dynamics, is investigated in terms of a linearized, variable collision frequency model of the Boltzmann equation. A convenient change of variables is used to reduce the general case considered to a canonical form that is well suited for analysis by analytical and/or numerical methods. While the general form...

Numerical Simulation of Effect of Drain Pipe in Uplift Force and Exit Hydraulic Gradient in Gravity Dams

In this study, the effects of diameter and location of drain pipe in uplift force and exit hydraulic gradient in the foundation of gravity dams are investigated. For this purpose, a numerical model of gravity dam foundation is simulated using finite elements method. The results indicate that drain pipe under the gravity dam reduces the uplift force and exit hydraulic gradient. Location of the d...

Kramers’ turnover theory for diffusion of Na atoms on a Cu„001... surface measured by He scattering

The diffusion of adatoms and molecules on a surface at low coverage can be measured by helium scattering. The experimental observable is the dynamic structure factor. In this article, we show how Kramers’ turnover theory can be used to infer physical properties of the diffusing particle from the experiment. Previously, Chudley and Elliot showed, under reasonable assumptions, that the dynamic st...

Smoluchowski–kramers Approximation and Large Deviations for Infinite-dimensional Nongradient Systems with Applications to the Exit Problem1 by Sandra Cerrai

In this paper, we study the quasi-potential for a general class of damped semilinear stochastic wave equations. We show that as the density of the mass converges to zero, the infimum of the quasi-potential with respect to all possible velocities converges to the quasi-potential of the corresponding stochastic heat equation, that one obtains from the zero mass limit. This shows in particular tha...
